Black Velvet Begonia

I must say that in comparison to all of my begonia owned - I would say this is my 1st favourite in my Begonia List. Black Velvet is indeed a mysterious and elusive begonia which is rare and hard to get. I realized that they are not cultivated in bulk in any plant center, nurseries or vendor - hence the only way you might get your hands on them is through a collector.

CHARACTERISTICS:

In comparison to Bethlehem Star, this particular one is more larger and more broader.
The leaves seemed to be more glossy looking with stable coloration all around the foliage surface, this has only one singular color without any variegation or additional tones.

1) Bigger leaf formation in comparison to Bethlehem Star (7 pointed Star)
2) Leaf Stem - Yellow with Red Furry Hairs.

I also found that this one more robust and fast growing begonia in comparison with other types. It appears that this particular one is a rhizome type and requires more like a succulent like condition as too much water can cause them to have rot problems.

The picture above to show how it appear to be like when the foliage is watered.

See how vibrant and glorious the new leaf looking like. (Pic above)

This is what I want to make an emphasise about the Black Velvet Begonia especially the iridescent blue coloration that appears for this particular types only. Visible at a slight angle - this shimmering blue is visible during the evening to night time only.

Because of irregular humidity and lighting problems that I face in my garden, it took almost few months for me to find an ideal place for them as I had constantly killed most of them in my trial and error situation in getting them right.  I must say that are equally challenging and rewarding in getting them grow and thrive in the garden.

I'm hoping after few months this particular Black Velvet Begonia fills the pot with a full formation of foliages and well grown. I will update once I had accomplish this.
