Begonia 'U508' / Begonia 'Cotes de Castillon'


CHARACTERISTICS:

Similar like Begonia 'U358' / Begonia Pewterware, this is native from Malaysia. This one is Begonia 'U508' but popularly known as Begonia 'Cotes de Castillon'  - a rhizome begonia which is very much has a silvery faded tones. It has a burgundy dark tones at the underleaf with light pink flowers.

This begonia species was brought to the US and in cultivated in 1995 from the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden by Henri Laporte who owns a vineyard named it after his favourite wine. This particular one is known to be winter hardy.

This particular one is a rhizome begonia. The leaves appears to be in oval shape.

Quoting from The American Begonia Society's Unidentified Species Listing

U508 {Additional information from Jacky Duruisseau, 2009. "It was brought back by Henri Laporte from the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden (not Kuala Lumpur Botanical Garden as I told you) in 1995. Henri shared of it with AFABEGO {Assoc. Francoise de Amateurs de Begonias} members. He called it 'Cote de Castillon' and all here, grow it with this name. Cote de Castillon is a wine: Henri was a wine grower (in the Castillon area) when he was retired (before he was an electricity teacher); so the red color of U508 inspired him for the name...who is, of course, no recognized.")
