Begonia - Art Hodes

Begonia 'Art Hodes' has asymmetrical large green foliage
where the leaf surface are covered with fine furry red hairs that gives them a darker appearance.

I would describe this as paper crisp, sand paper like foliage.
More like fig leaf shaped and more of upright climber.
The green stalk is not like a cane - not sturdy and needs a support.

I had noticed that this is not a rhizome begonia as most website mentioned,
rather it's more shrub like.
Another factor is that it's a thirsty plant,
though it can tolerate hotter climate and handle well any begonia plant
- it will collapse if not hydrated sufficiently.

This was a gift from a friend from Sarawak and it's truly a beauty to behold.

The stem seemed to be a little fragile and may fall and break.
And so, it's important to put a stake and fastened them for support or they might grow properly.

The foliage appears to grow bigger as it matures
and I believe that it's a good idea to propagate the trimmed leaves for spares
in case this one decides to wave good-bye in my garden.

I had noticed that this particular type is not sold
commonly in any of the Sg.Buloh nurseries.
I have yet to see its inflorescence. Hopefully it blooms soon.
